Shuttle 1971 VW Bus Phoenix 70s conversion Van Star Wars Star Trek Enterprise styling

1971 VW Phoenix Conversion Van

Back in the 70s a company conversion Vans where the rage A company called RQ Riley offered something different.. Instead of the same old vans, you could build your own or buy a pre-built Body from RQ in a few different configurations. Gullwing Doors / Space Shuttle style hatch Fiberglass reinforeced body / Glass windshield Take the body and bolt it onto your avg VW Type II Bus chassis and build the rest anyway you want, this one never got finished. Space Age looks / VW reliability , mileage and low cost to maintain. Ive had this parked out in front of my Performance Car shop for a few months now and still everyday I have people coming in asking about it and stopping to taking pics of it.

THESE ARE RARE AND HARD TO FIND PEOPLE WILLING TO SELL THEM YOU COULDNT BUILD ONE EVEN IN THIS CONDITION FOR WHAT MY RESERVE IS My plans where to finish the inside with a wrap around couch , bar and flat screen tv. Add to the modern smd or fiberoptic lighting, a great sound system all in some cool colors. Keep the divider between front and back clean but futuristic with modern touches and creature comforts. Then paint the outside like something from Star Trek or Star Wars or even wrap it with vinyl like they do with city buses now a days, and youd have the coolest SHUTTLE you could rent out by the hour within a few hundred miles. From adults bar hopping to kids birthday partys, you could have the coolest rig around up for rent by the hour. When your not renting it out you could still use it as a normal TAXI just to get people around. Its a money maker and excellent investment if you do it right. You may recall seeing these on the cover of Popular Mechanics or Mechanics Illustrated back in the 70s. Powered by the original 1971 VW Bus single port 1600 motor, which actually runs and sounds great, but muffler is pretty old. Manuel transmission / disc brakes up front / we just changed the front brake lines and brake master. Its not finished of course but it does start and runs and stops well enough to drive around the parking lot etc. I drove it around the block a few times, that was fun. Youll notice the 17x8 Mustang wheels on it, they fit the look and fit nice and are installed by using billet 1.25" Adaptors. With the adaptors you can run almost any 5x4.5" bolt pattern wheel.

Fiberglass body for its age its in really nice shape, looks to have been gelcoated when it was built for longevity. Has a cool little swamp cooler style cooler on the roof even that should be functional with a little work. Because its not that heavy, it actually has decent power for what it is. Prob could use a tune up and choke adjustment too to be a daily driver. Tires are old and worn out. Didnt see any shocks present. But again, this is an unfinished project. LOTS OF PICS, it may take a full minute for them all to load if you have a slow connection, so be patient. Remember: they arent making anymore :) Az gets maybe 12" a yr of rain. Check out All the pics and then look for more info AFTER the pics etc. There are over 90, make sure you use the schroll bar on the side to see them all.

On Feb-18-2012 at 00:52:49 PST, seller added the following information: THIS VEHICLE DOES HAVE TWO COOL FACTORY OPTIONS WORTH MENTIONING:

Front Disc Brakes 4 wheel parking brake

I commend the persons with enough imagination that are bidding on this Vehicle. Even if you never drive it and use it for as an attention getter like we did for the last yr, it will get the job done. Park it in front of your shop or business and get ready to turn heads in your direction. Even if you just lit it up at nite too for more attention you wont see anything like it for miles or Galaxys haha around.

Question & Answer

Q: Do you have any idea what it weighs? How did you get it from the barn to your shop? Truck or trailer? I'm asking because I want to know if I can trailer it home with my Sprinter. Also, what size tires are are on it and do they hold air? I see at least one of them is flat. Feb-16-12

A: Originally we had it towed with a flatbed they are 245-45-17s after about a month 2 tires will get low from a slow leak. I dont mind them being flat, because the vehicle is outside my shop and less chance of anyone messing with it since I cant lock it. Prob weighs less then a normal outfitted VW bus.

Q: I see wires all over the place. How much of the electrical is working, lights, turn signals, brake lights, etc.? Feb-16-12

A: The car starts and runs with the key, so thats okay.. DS headlights work, not sure why the others dont work. honestly cant say I checked the rest of them. In my honest opinion, Id buy a nice new universal wireing kit from Painless Wiring and start fresh with updated and new equipment there. If you wanted to do it right.

Q: Does this come with an 8-Track sound system? Feb-15-12

A: yes, a Jefferson Starship one in quadraphonic baby !! haha, jk imagine what sort of system you could put in this thing though now a days.

Q: I just became aware of this space van and I'm seriously interested in it. Are you available to tell me more about it on the phone? Thanks, Feb-15-12

A: We found it in Tubac Az south of Tucson about 30 miles. Its been there since the 80s parked. We bought it last yr, got it up and running and stopping. Not sure about the mileage, but its a vw motor, they go along time and simple to rebuild. Some may even opt to swap a flat subaru 4 or 6 cyl motor in it for an extra 200hp !! LOL Its done all the time. As for what it needs ? depends on how far you want to go with it. hope this helps Dayle

Q: Your ad says it has a V-8 engine, The 1971 VW Bus single port 1600 motor is not a V-8 its a 4 cyl Feb-15-12

A: yeah, my mistake sorry. Ive seen people swap Subaru boxer motors into these before and adds about 150 or more hp. just FYI

Q: Bring a Trailer that is. Cool website aggregating and linking to cool cars (in case you haven't been there). http://bringatrailer.com/2012/02/15/1971-vw-phoenix-van-conversion/ I enjoy your listings! keep them coming. Feb-15-12

A: Seen it as well as cars in barns :) thanks , hope to have more all the time

Q: COOOOOOOOl VAN,THANK YOU JOLENE Feb-14-12

A: We agree !!
